Elephants  are large mammals of the family  Elephantidae  and the order  Proboscidea . Three species are recognised, the  African bush elephant  ( Loxodonta africana ), the  African forest elephant  ( L. cyclotis ), and the  Asian elephant  ( Elephas maximus ).
